Child Safety calls for unified family, school efforts

Child Safety calls for unified family, school efforts

SHARJAH, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- As students return to school, the Child Safety Organisation has called for families and schools to work together to strengthen six key pillars that support children’s safety and wellbeing throughout the 2026–2027 academic year: safe journeys between home and school; health readiness; responsible, family-supervised digital use; promoting respectful behaviour; open family dialogue; and sustained communication between parents and teachers. The organisation stressed that returning to school is an important transition in a child’s life. It begins when they leave home and get into a vehicle, and continues until they arrive safely at school. Alongside adhering to safety measures during daily journeys, children need support to rebuild their routines and prepare emotionally and socially for a new year of learning, experiences and relationships. This period is also an opportunity for families and schools to renew the circle of care around every child and create an environment that fosters safety, confidence and belonging.Hanadi Saleh Al Yafei, Director General of the Child Safety Organisation, said, “The school year succeeds when a child is surrounded by one network of trust: a family that listens, a school that notices and embraces them, and a digital space guided by knowledge and responsibility. Then, children feel that their voices are heard, that asking for support is their right, and that respect for themselves and others is part of their daily lives.”She added, “This is the culture we want to accompany our children throughout the year: one that gives them the reassurance they need to learn, the ability to build healthy relationships, and the confidence to face challenges. The more consistent the messages children receive at home, at school and in the digital world, the more aware their choices become and the more stable and positive their school experience will be.”The organisation highlighted health and wellbeing as key priorities as students settle into the new school year, given the strong connection between regular sleep, balanced nutrition, physical activity and adequate water intake, and a child’s ability to concentrate, regulate emotions and engage positively throughout the school day.According to established health recommendations, children aged 6 to 12 need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep each day, while adolescents aged 13 to 18 need between 8 and 10 hours. The World Health Organisation also recommends that children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 undertake an average of 60 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The organisation noted that maintaining consistent and healthy routines during the first weeks of the school year can help children adjust to their daily academic schedules and manage the demands of the school day more effectively. Balanced daily habits remain essential to supporting their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their concentration, energy levels and readiness to learn. The Child Safety Organisation stressed that digital use has become an integral part of children’s educational and social experiences, making informed family supervision an ongoing necessity that takes account of a child’s age, maturity and the nature of the digital spaces they use.It noted that digital safety is strengthened through dialogue and clear family agreements on practices that protect privacy and regulate the use of devices and platforms. This helps children develop awareness of how to engage with content and digital communication, and encourages them to turn to a trusted person when they encounter an experience that concerns them or goes beyond safe boundaries. The organisation emphasised that balanced supervision preserves channels of trust with children while combining protection with the opportunity to develop digital responsibility. This helps them use technology positively and safely for learning, communication and entertainment. It also said that preventing school bullying begins with creating a learning environment built on respect and acceptance of differences, where every child feels valued, included and confident in expressing themselves. Students should be encouraged to promote positive behaviour, support their peers and seek help when needed, contributing to a more cooperative and cohesive school community. As students’ relationships and interactions increasingly extend to digital platforms, the organisation called for cyberbullying to be included within school and family protection frameworks. It urged the promotion of responsible technology use and greater awareness among children of their digital rights and responsibilities. Early dialogue and cooperation between families and schools help contain concerns promptly and protect children’s psychological and social wellbeing. The Child Safety Organisation described regular family communication as one of the most important foundations of prevention, as it creates a safe space for children to share their experiences, feelings and concerns. This helps families better understand their children’s world, relationships, interests and any pressures they may face at school or on digital platforms. The organisation stressed that dialogue with children becomes even more valuable when it goes beyond monitoring academic performance and homework to take an interest in their social and emotional experiences. Listening attentively and respecting their feelings gives children the confidence to express themselves and seek support, while reinforcing their sense that their family is a constant source of safety and care.It also called for children to be made aware of the trusted people they can turn to at home and at school, and for them to understand that sharing anything that causes them concern or discomfort will be met with understanding and support.Communication between parents and teachers, the organisation said, is equally essential to understanding children’s needs and supporting their development throughout the academic year. The effectiveness of this partnership is strengthened when it is based on trust, continuity and the exchange of observations in an environment that respects privacy.Families and schools see different yet complementary aspects of a child’s experience: families observe their habits and feelings at home, while schools notice their attendance, interactions and relationships in the learning environment. By maintaining positive communication from the beginning of the school year, parents and teachers can form a more complete understanding of the child, provide support at the right time, and ensure that the messages children receive are consistent. The Child Safety Organisation continues to deliver awareness and training programmes for children, families and professionals working in sectors connected to them. It also affirmed its continued cooperation with educational, social, security and health entities to build an integrated child-protection system and promote community awareness of practices that support children’s health, safety and wellbeing.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City launches early detection clinic for Type 1 diabetes

ABU DHABI, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a subsidiary of PureHealth, has launched a specialised early detection clinic for Type 1 diabetes, strengthening identification and intervention for children and adolescents at risk of developing the disease.Type 1 diabetes is a complex autoimmune disease with no known cure and is becoming increasingly common among children and adolescents in the UAE. Some cases are identified at later stages, highlighting the urgent need for earlier detection and proactive disease management in achieving better health outcomes. With the launch of its specialised Type 1 diabetes early detection clinic, SSMC continues to support the transition towards a more proactive healthcare model in Abu Dhabi, focused on prevention, early detection, and timely intervention. The clinic is designed for families with a first-degree relative, such as a parent or sibling, already diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Children and adolescents in these families face a significantly higher likelihood of developing the condition and can now be screened before symptoms appear.Dr Asma Deeb, Consultant Pediatrician and Chair of the Paediatric Endocrinology Division at SSMC, said, “The clinic represents a fundamental shift, from reacting to crisis to identifying risk early and intervening before the disease takes hold. By combining advanced screening, innovative treatment, and an integrated multidisciplinary care model, SSMC is giving families the opportunity to protect their children’s health and quality of life.”Dr Hassan Shawa, Acting Chair of the Endocrinology Division at SSMC, said, “The opening of the specialised early detection clinic for Type 1 diabetes represents a milestone in establishing a proactive model of care that helps delay disease progression and reduce the risk of acute complications. This step aligns with SSMC’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare, improving the quality of life for families and the wider community, as well as reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global destination for medical care.”The clinic uses a simple blood test to detect diabetes-related antibodies, enabling clinicians to identify increased risk at a pre-symptomatic stage. A positive antibody result allows for early monitoring, education for families, and prompt clinical decision-making, supporting a shift from emergency response to long-term prevention. With the support of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), as part of its ongoing efforts to accelerate access to innovative solutions and treatments that deliver a meaningful impact on patients' lives, the clinic will provide eligible patients with the first FDA-approved medication shown to delay the need for insulin in children and adults susceptible to Type 1 diabetes. The treatment is administered through a daily infusion over a two-week period under close medical supervision and has been shown to delay disease onset in eligible high-risk individuals. In addition to early detection and intervention, SSMC also offers advanced diabetes management technologies for patients who require ongoing insulin therapy, including Omnipod 5, the world’s first tubeless automated insulin delivery system.Introduced in Abu Dhabi through DoH’s Health Technology Assessment framework, the technology reflects the emirate’s evidence-based approach to evaluating and adopting innovations that deliver clear clinical and system value. By automatically adjusting insulin delivery based on glucose readings, Omnipod 5 supports more precise diabetes management, helps patients maintain more stable glucose levels, and reduces the burden of constant manual monitoring and dosing decisions.

Dubai Police boost road presence to ensure safe start to new school year

DUBAI, 31st August, 2026 (WAM) -- Dubai Police have intensified the deployment of traffic teams and patrols across roads, intersections and areas surrounding schools as students return for the new academic year, coinciding with the ‘A Day Without Accidents’ initiative. The enhanced presence covers both morning and afternoon peak periods and aims to regulate traffic, reduce congestion, and ensure students travel to and from school safely.Brigadier Musabbah Saeed Al Ghafli, Assistant Commander-in-chief for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, said traffic teams have been deployed according to a carefully developed plan focusing on locations experiencing heavy volumes of vehicles and school buses.Particular attention has been given to school entrances and exits to enable rapid intervention and address any congestion that could affect traffic flow.Brigadier Al Ghafli stressed that the return to school requires greater attention and patience from all road users. He urged parents to leave home early, avoid speeding and rushing, use designated student drop off areas, and ensure children exit vehicles from the side closest to the pavement. He also warned against stopping in the middle of the road, double parking or blocking school entrances, noting that such practices disrupt traffic and put others at risk.Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police and Head of the ‘A Day Without Accidents’ initiative, stressed the importance of accompanying young children to the school gate rather than allowing them to cross roads alone.Parents and drivers should ensure the road is clear before opening vehicle doors and should never allow children to exit from the side facing moving traffic.Brigadier bin Suwaidan also urged students travelling by school bus to follow the instructions of drivers and bus supervisors and wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before getting off. After leaving the bus, students should move away from the vehicle and avoid walking or crossing immediately in front of or behind it, where they may be outside the driver’s field of vision. Students should instead use designated pedestrian crossings and other safe crossing points.Brigadier bin Suwaidan warned motorists against passing school buses when the ‘STOP’ sign is extended. Drivers must come to a complete stop and maintain a safe distance of at least five metres to allow students to board and leave buses safely.Dubai Police called on motorists and parents to cooperate with school security guards and follow their directions regarding parking, entry and exit routes, and student drop off areas.Drivers were reminded not to obstruct school entrances or park in prohibited areas, as compliance with these instructions helps prevent congestion and provides a safer, more organised environment outside schools.Brigadier bin Suwaidan stressed that student safety is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among parents, motorists, educational institutions and security personnel. He called on all road users to comply with traffic regulations and exercise patience and vigilance, particularly during peak periods and around schools.
