UN puts Gaza reconstruction needs at US$71.4bn

NEW YORK, 7th October, 2026 (WAM) -- The United Nations has estimated Gaza's recovery and reconstruction needs at around US$71.4 billion, in light of the extensive damage to assets, infrastructure and the economy across the Gaza Strip. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warned in a report that humanitarian assistance alone would not be sufficient to put Gaza's economy on a path towards sustainable recovery. In its report, submitted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the General Assembly, UNCTAD said physical infrastructure damage in Gaza was estimated at US$35.2 billion. Total recovery and reconstruction needs were estimated at around US$71.4 billion, equivalent to more than four times Palestinian GDP in 2025.The report said Gaza's economy recorded real growth of 34.2 per cent in 2025, following a sharp contraction of 83 per cent in 2024. Real GDP per capita stood at just US$212 in 2025, while unemployment exceeded 78 per cent.It noted that productive sectors suffered unprecedented contractions, with agricultural and industrial output each declining by around 94 per cent, while the construction sector shrank by about 99 per cent compared with 2022 levels.Gaza's contribution to Palestinian GDP also fell from 17.4 per cent before October 2023 to less than 4 per cent in 2025.The UNCTAD report concluded that rebuilding Gaza's economy would require an approach that goes beyond emergency humanitarian assistance, combining relief, reconstruction and economic development.

WHO chief calls for sustained action, investment to prepare for future pandemics

NEW YORK, 26th September, 2026 (WAM) -- Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has called for sustained action and investment to strengthen global preparedness for future pandemics, warning that the lessons of COVID-19 must translate into stronger national and international health systems.Addressing the second United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, Dr Tedros said the COVID-19 pandemic had exposed and exacerbated weaknesses in global health security and demonstrated the need for urgent and measurable action."The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and exacerbated the fault lines of global health security, and taught the world many painful lessons," he said."The political commitment shown today reflects those lessons, and includes important commitments to concrete, measurable and urgent action to build and strengthen local and national capacities, to invest in resilient health systems, and to expand equitable access to products, tools and resources."WHO said COVID-19 was linked to more than 20 million excess deaths between 2020 and 2023 and wiped more than US$10 trillion from the global economy.Dr Tedros stressed that continued investment was essential to sustain progress made in recent years and strengthen the world's ability to detect, prepare for and respond to future pandemic threats. The meeting also highlighted progress in international health cooperation, including the adoption of the WHO Pandemic Agreement and amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005).Countries further underlined the need to conclude negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing system, which is intended to support the timely sharing of pathogens with pandemic potential and equitable access to vaccines, medicines, diagnostics and other health products.

Egypt unearths rare tombs, Roman camp in Nile Delta

CAIRO, 20th September, 2026 (WAM) -- An Egyptian archaeological mission working at the Tell el-Yahudiya archaeological site in Qalyubia Governorate has uncovered a number of rock-cut tombs of different architectural styles, while continuing to excavate the remains of a Roman camp in the upper layers above the tombs.Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the discovery represents an important addition to the history of the area, particularly given the rarity of rock-cut tombs in the Nile Delta due to its predominantly clay soil.He said the discovery would contribute to a better understanding of burial practices and their development in the eastern Delta across different historical periods.El-Leithy said archaeological finds indicate that the tombs date to the late New Kingdom and continued to be used through the Late Period, reflecting the continuity of funerary activity at the site over successive historical periods. He added that the discovery of the Roman camp remains above the tombs confirms the continued use of the Tell el-Yahudiya area during different historical periods and highlights its strategic importance over time. The tombs belong to two architectural types. The first features a staircase leading to a hall containing burial niches, while the second consists of a rectangular shaft leading to two burial chambers.Such tombs are rare in the Delta, with only a limited number of known examples, including rock-cut tombs at Kom El-Shoqafa in Alexandria and sites along Egypt's North Coast.
