Al Dhaid Date Festival 2026 opens Thursday at Expo Al Dhaid
SHARJAH, 7th October, 2026 (WAM) -- The sixth edition of the Al Dhaid Date Festival will kick off tomorrow, Thursday, at Expo Al Dhaid, bringing together farmers, date producers and palm owners from across the UAE for four days of auctions, competitions and activities celebrating local date production.Organised by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), the festival will run until 11 October and feature the participation of commercial palm growers, retailers and agricultural companies, as well as government entities, productive families and home-based businesses involved in date cultivation.The Al Dhaid Date Festival underscores the Sharjah Chamber's commitment to supporting the palm cultivation and local agricultural production sectors, while creating opportunities to promote sustainable food security. It is expected to attract a large audience of Al Dhaid residents, visitors, and those interested in dates and agriculture.Held in cooperation with Al Dhaid City Municipality, this year's edition will offer a comprehensive programme of events and activities designed to support the development of the UAE's date palm sector. It will feature a dedicated market showcasing premium Emirati date varieties, alongside auctions offering valuable prizes.The programme will also include expert-led workshops focusing on modern agricultural techniques and date palm care, providing farmers and growers with practical knowledge and exposure to new agricultural technologies and palm cultivation practices.Alongside its commercial and agricultural programme, the festival will feature cultural and artistic activities and traditional folkloric performances, highlighting the significance of date palms in Emirati heritage.The festival places a particular focus on supporting productive families and local home businesses by allocating dedicated platforms that provide them with direct access to consumers and traders, thereby helping increase the commercial value and market potential of locally produced dates.The premium dates auction will commence following the official opening ceremony on Thursday, 8 October, with subsequent auctions scheduled after Maghrib prayers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The date market will be open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, while consignments for auction will be accepted each day from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.The auction programme will be divided into two dedicated categories: farm-grown dates and household-produced dates. To join the auctions, participants must first complete the official registration form at the registration desk, then submit their dates for classification and weighing by the designated committee.Each participant will subsequently be allocated a table in their name and must attend the bidding in person or through a representative, with transactions concluded directly between sellers and buyers.The Organising Committee of the Al Dhaid Date Festival has outlined specific terms and conditions to safeguard auction standards. Eligible dates must be locally produced during the 2026 season and sourced directly from farms or households. Entries must be premium-grade and free from pests, insects, apparent defects, and any abnormal taste or odour. Pressed or bundled dates are excluded.Each bidder is allowed to enter a maximum of 30 kilograms per auction, equivalent to 10 cartons, packed in festival-approved cardboard boxes. Participants may display up to two varieties on their designated table, within the overall permitted weight limit.

Sheikh Rashid bin Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, Crown Prince of Umm Al Qaiwain, witnessed the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Anantara Resort and Residences on Al Siniya Island in a new move reflecting the emirate's continued progress in tourism and real estate development, and reinforcing its position as a distinguished coastal and tourism destination in the UAE.The groundbreaking ceremony followed the announcement of a strategic partnership between Sobha Al Siniya Island and Minor Hotels to introduce the Anantara Hotels & Resorts brand to the Emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain for the first time. The project will be developed through Sobha Al Siniya LLC, a joint venture between Sobha Realty and Umm Al Qaiwain Properties.The ceremony was held on Sobha Al Siniya Island in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saud Al Mualla, Deputy Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain, alongside Ravi Menon, Chairman of the Sobha Group; Francis Alfred, Managing Director and CEO of Sobha Realty; William Heinecke, Founder and Chairman of Minor International; and a number of officials and representatives of the relevant entities.The partnership agreement was signed by Sheikh Mansour Al Mualla, board member, and Francis Alfred on behalf of Sobha Al Siniya Island, while Amir Golberg, Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East and Africa at Minor Hotels, signed on behalf of Minor Hotels.The project marks a significant milestone in the development of Sobha Al Siniya Island, bringing together the island's integrated master plan with Minor Hotels' global hospitality expertise. It aligns with Umm Al Qaiwain's efforts to support the growth of the tourism, residential and economic sectors, while developing distinctive and sustainable destinations.Anantara Al Siniya Island Resort and Anantara Sobha Al Siniya Island Residences are scheduled to open in 2030. The high-end luxury hospitality development will comprise 125 hotel rooms and 125 branded Anantara residential units, making it one of the key hospitality destinations within the island's master plan.Sobha Al Siniya Island spans approximately 23 million square feet and is being developed as a low-density coastal community featuring apartments, villas, resorts, leisure facilities, and extensive open and green spaces.More than 60% of the master plan is dedicated to waterways, open areas, and green spaces. The destination is approximately 50 minutes from Dubai and is connected to the mainland by a bridge measuring around 1.7 kilometres in length.

This reflects its growing global presence and its position among the country's leading cultural and tourism destinations, a place where worship is observed and from which bridges of rapprochement and cultural dialogue extend.Dr. Yousif Al Obaidli, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, said, "The mosque's growing global presence is the fruit of the vision of the UAE's wise leadership, which is taking the nation to global prominence in every sector. ABU DHABI, 27th September, 2026 (WAM) --The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a leading global tourism destination, offering a diverse mix of cultural, leisure, nature and hospitality experiences, backed by world-class infrastructure, extensive air connectivity and coordinated offerings across the seven emirates.Travel and tourism contributed around AED251.3 billion to the UAE economy in 2025, up 3 percent from 2024 and more than 22 percent from 2019, while international visitor spending reached approximately AED209 billion.In 2026, the UAE advanced its sustainable tourism agenda with the adoption of the National Ecotourism Policy, designed to balance economic development with the conservation of ecosystems and natural resources while showcasing the country's natural and cultural assets.The UAE has 55 nature reserves, while around 4,900 hectares of deserts, mountains and beaches have been rehabilitated, creating further opportunities for ecotourism and nature-based experiences and encouraging responsible tourism practices.Efforts to present the UAE as an integrated destination gained momentum with the launch of the unified 'Visit UAE' identity, bringing the distinctive attractions of each emirate under a single national brand.The Ministry of Economy and Tourism also launched the 'UAE Grand Tour' platform, offering itineraries of up to 14 days across all seven emirates. The initiative encourages visitors to explore multiple destinations and extend their stays, while facilitating integrated programmes for international markets.In Dubai, the Department of Economy and Tourism launched the 'A Dubai Invite' programme enabling residents to invite family and friends to experience the city. Running until 31st October 2026, it offers exclusive benefits to residents of around 200 nationalities when inviting relatives and friends to Dubai.The Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, meanwhile, launched the 'RAK Ambassador' initiative, engaging citizens and residents in promoting the emirate as an investment and tourism destination. The initiative, which also runs until 31st October, encourages them to invite relatives and friends from abroad, supporting visitor numbers, hotel occupancy and local business activity.In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi's 'Hayyakum' campaign offers a summer programme combining Yas Island's theme parks, cultural and artistic experiences at museums in Saadiyat Cultural District and family-oriented activities.These initiatives contribute to the National Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to raise the sector's contribution to GDP to AED450 billion, attract AED100 billion in new tourism investment and reach 40 million hotel guests annually.The UAE is also broadening its tourism map beyond major cities by bringing villages and emerging destinations into the national offering, extending the economic benefits of visitor activity across different regions.Domestic tourism has maintained strong momentum. The sixth edition of the World's Coolest Winter campaign generated AED12.5 billion in hotel revenues and attracted around five million hotel guests, up 5 percent from the previous edition, with occupancy reaching 84 percent.From urban destinations and international events to cultural, natural, desert and coastal attractions, the breadth of experiences available across the UAE helps draw diverse visitor segments throughout the year.Among its cultural offerings is "Cultural Trails in Al Ain", launched by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi. The 1.4-kilometre interactive trail through the historic Al Jimi and Al Qattara oases highlights Al Ain's cultural character and runs until 31st December.The hospitality sector continues to attract investment and diversify its accommodation offering, supported by public-private partnerships.Hotel establishments welcomed around 32.34 million guests in 2025, up 5.2 percent from 30.75 million in 2024, while guest nights exceeded 110.62 million, an increase of nearly 5.9 percent. Hotel revenues rose 9.7 percent to approximately AED49.21 billion, with around 217,000 rooms across more than 1,240 establishments.The UAE's extensive aviation network provides a key foundation for the sector. Passenger traffic through the country's airports reached 156.8 million in 2025, up 6.1 percent from 147.8 million a year earlier, while aircraft movements increased 6.8 percent to around 855,300.Dubai International Airport remained the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic in 2025, handling 95.2 million passengers, reflecting the UAE's position as a global aviation hub connecting international markets.

Sharjah Safari opens fifth season tomorrow
SHARJAH, 20th September, 2026 (WAM) -- Sharjah Safari will open its fifth season tomorrow, Monday, offering visitors new wildlife experiences, educational programmes and behind-the-scenes animal care tours.The new season builds on Sharjah Safari's breeding and animal care programmes, which recorded 186 births during the second quarter of 2026.The births included South African giraffes, elephants, lions, oryx, blue wildebeest, impala, nyala and zebra.Sharjah Safari also recently welcomed six critically endangered radiated tortoise hatchlings, supporting its efforts in species conservation and biodiversity.Aisha Rashid Deemas, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA), said the fifth season represents another step in developing Sharjah Safari's role in wildlife conservation while providing visitors with an educational and engaging experience.She said the Safari aims to deepen visitors' understanding of wildlife and the importance of conservation through programmes that combine observation, education and direct engagement.The fifth season will introduce exclusive behind-the-scenes tours during selected periods, offering visitors insight into daily animal care and the specialised expertise involved in maintaining the Safari's wildlife.Educational and recreational activities will also continue throughout the season, giving visitors opportunities to observe animals across expansive environments designed to reflect their natural habitats.The new season further strengthens Sharjah Safari's role as an eco-tourism destination combining conservation, education and entertainment.Sharjah Safari will welcome visitors daily from 08:30 to 18:00 starting Monday, 21st September.
