Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) expects AI-driven traffic signals to reduce congestion by at least 10 per cent, a senior official has said.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA's Corporate Technology Support Services Sector, told Dubai Radio's Direct Line programme that all signals in the emirate are being connected to the traffic management centre in Al Barsha, a project due to finish early next year. Using camera feeds and existing systems, AI will anticipate bottlenecks and change signal timings dynamically. He noted that other projects would also help ease traffic.

The signals are part of an updated AI strategy covering 41 areas of the RTA, to be rolled out in six phases over two and a half years; the first two phases are now under way. Motorists will increasingly be able to pay fines and renew vehicle registrations and driving licences through an AI assistant, and more than 50 per cent of service operations are expected to move to that ecosystem within two years.

The strategy is projected to add more than Dh300 million in value a year. AI could also expand monitoring of RTA assets, worth more than Dh150 billion, to about five times the current coverage.
